VHP Strict on Garba, Announces Agitation Against Obscenity

  • Issued “Model Garba Dance” Guidelines, Demands Implementation from Administration
  • Strict Stand on Venue, Security, Songs, Attire, and Food

Raipur/Chhattisgarh:
This Navratri, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal have taken a tough stand on the growing modern and flashy trends of Garba. Navratri begins on 22nd September, and as every year, Durga Puja committees will organize Garba dance—a symbol of devotion and strength—in temples and Durga pandals to please the Goddess.

However, in recent years distorted forms of Garba have been witnessed. Taking serious note of this, the Bajrang Dal has adopted a strict stance. District Convenor Vijendra Verma said firmly that since this is a Hindu religious festival, any negligence will force them to launch an agitation. He also mentioned holding discussions with organizing committees and appealed to parents and youth of Chhattisgarh to maintain the sanctity of these events through their conduct.

Mr. Verma released a detailed set of guidelines under the banner of “Model Garba Dance”, addressed to the general public:

  1. Garba dance must only be organized within temple premises or Durga pandals.
  2. Only devotional songs, religious hymns, and traditional jas-geet should be played; film songs or obscene tracks are strictly prohibited.
  3. Traditional attire and dress code should be followed.
  4. Since mothers and sisters of the Hindu community actively participate, events should not be allowed beyond midnight (12 AM) for their safety.
  5. Hindu bouncers (bodyguards) must be appointed for entry gates and other arrangements. Parking facilities should be adequate, and even staff at parking sites must belong to the Hindu community.
  6. Participation of men and women, boys and girls from non-Hindu communities is strictly prohibited.
  7. No alcohol or non-vegetarian food stalls should be allowed near Garba venues.

To ensure compliance with these points, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad–Bajrang Dal, Raipur Metropolitan Unit submitted a letter to the Raipur Collector, stating that any violation of these guidelines by the organizing committees would be considered an insult to religious sentiments and an act of provoking Hindu feelings.

The letter further warned that in such a situation, the Bajrang Dal would be compelled to launch a large-scale agitation. It also cautioned that if strict action is not taken against the offenders in time, the administration will be held fully responsible.
