Preserving the Legacy of Knowledge in the Digital Age: Chhattisgarh Calls for Public Participation

From Survey to Preservation – Manuscript Mission Gains Momentum in Chhattisgarh

Raipur | Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has appealed to the people of Chhattisgarh to actively participate in preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage and ancient knowledge systems. He emphasized that manuscripts are living evidence of India’s civilization, culture, and intellectual wealth, and it is a collective responsibility to safeguard them for future generations.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the ‘Gyanbharatam National Manuscript Survey Mission’, launched by the Central Government, is a visionary initiative aimed at identifying, preserving, and digitizing ancient manuscripts across the country. He urged citizens who possess old manuscripts, handwritten texts, or palm-leaf documents to register their details on the Gyanbharatam mobile application, thereby becoming part of this national mission.

He added that even small contributions by citizens can make a significant impact in preserving the nation’s cultural identity. Public participation, he said, will give new recognition to Chhattisgarh’s knowledge heritage and ensure that this priceless legacy reaches future generations safely.

Statewide Progress and Participation

Launched nationally in March 2026, the campaign is progressing steadily in Chhattisgarh. Out of 33 districts in the state, district-level committees and nodal officers have been appointed in 26 districts, while the process is underway in the remaining seven.

District-level committees are conducting meetings to identify manuscript holders and appoint surveyors at village and block levels. The nodal department (Culture Department) is coordinating with regional teams to train surveyors and accelerate documentation efforts.

So far, information about 148 manuscripts was initially received from the Government of India. The survey has begun in six districts of Chhattisgarh, and 4,191 manuscripts have already been documented through the Gyanbharatam app.

What Are Manuscripts and Why Do They Matter?

Manuscripts are ancient, handwritten documents that serve as invaluable records of human knowledge and tradition. They include:

  • Texts written on palm leaves and birch bark
  • Religious, literary, and scientific works
  • Traditional knowledge on Ayurveda, astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy
  • Folk wisdom and cultural practices

These are not merely old books—they are irreplaceable treasures that reflect history, culture, and intellectual evolution.

A Collective Step Toward a Digital Future

The Government’s initiative aims not only to conserve these manuscripts but also to make them accessible through digital platforms, ensuring that India’s knowledge heritage is preserved and shared with the world.

As Chhattisgarh embraces this mission, the movement reflects a powerful message:
When citizens unite to protect their heritage, the past becomes a guiding light for the future.
